Governor Update
The Governing Body met for the first meeting of
this academic year earlier this week. At this meeting Mrs Hacker was
newly appointed as our Chair of Governors. She replaces Mrs Inman
who has been our Chair for the past 29 years.
I am sure
that you would like to join me in thanking Mrs Inman for her
leadership, extraordinary dedication and for the effort that she has
given over the years.Fortunately, we still
have her vast experience to draw upon as she now takes up the role
of Vice Chair.
Art Competition
Below are the winners of the art competition.
Well done to everyone who entered, the standard was
extremely high.
Red Nose Day
*THRILLER DANCE VIDEO!*
The password
for the video is - thriller
A HUGE thank you to
everyone who helped make our Red Nose Day such a success. We
have now finished counting and I am delighted to inform you
that we raised a total of £983.75 !!
I’d also like to thank
Miss MacDonald for organising the day and all the staff who
reduced everyone to tears of laughter with a performance of
‘Thriller’.
Some
local schools have decided that the best way of ensuring
security is not to open the school gates until the start of
the school day and so you see children and parents waiting
on the pavement. Other schools open the gates at 8.45 a.m.
and allow the children into the playground.
At Gateway we pride ourselves on being an open school where
the staff are always available to speak to parents or make
an appointment if needed. However, this does not mean that
the school building is ‘open’ before we can supervise the
children. The staff attend a briefing meeting every morning
at 8.45 and so cannot be around to look after the children.
They go to their classrooms ready for the start of the day
at 8.55.
I often instruct Mrs Brown and others to open the doors a
few minutes early and we let children wait inside if it’s
raining. What we cannot do is continue to allow children and
parents in before our published time unless we are about to
supervise. It’s potentially very dangerous.
So please, by all means, send or bring children to school by
8.30 when Mr Ajban will be on duty in the playground.
Otherwise get to school between 8.45-8.50 ready for the
start of the day at 8.55. Younger brothers and
sisters of older children attending morning breakfast
classes can wait by the office until 8.30 when they can go
to the playground. I’d really appreciate your
help with this matter.
Ms. Lochner
Dear Parents/Carers
On behalf of the Governing Body, I am delighted to inform
you of the permanent appointment of Ms Lochner as
Headteacher, Gateway School, with effect from 20th January
2011.
We are confident that this appointment will ensure the
school's continued growth and success. We are sure that you
will join us in offering Ms Lochner our warmest
congratulations on her appointment along with our continuing
support for the future.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Inman
(Chair of Governors)
Mr Duggan – OBE
Mr Duggan has been named in
the Queen’s New Years
Honours List and will be
awarded an OBE for Services
to Education. This comes
after many years of
commitment and hard work as
both Deputy Head and
Headteacher. Such a
prestigious honour
recognises the part that
both Mr and Mrs Duggan have
played in making Gateway the
successful and high
achieving school that it is
today. We am sure you would
all like to join us in
offering our warmest
congratulations.
GATEWAY GOES EVEN GREENER!
Gateway is making a
huge effort this year to make the school more sustainable
and we need your help as parents and carers! We believe
that as a school community we can make a difference by doing
some small, everyday actions.
Every week we
will include an action in
the newsletter that we would
like you to sign up to.
Please show your support by
signing below and sending
your slip back into school
with your child. There will
be an Eco Box in each class
for your signatures and
every Friday at assembly, a
name will be pulled out of
the box to win a prize!
We’ll be starting off with a
kit to grow your own
chillies – so make sure you
don’t miss out!
Shocking fact! Every
person in this country uses an average of 167 plastic bags
every year. That's 10 billion bags all together which take
over 500 years to decay in landfill! If everyone at Gateway
said ‘no’ to just one plastic bag this week, together we
could save at least 800 plastic bags!
Our action for the week! I promise to say no to at least one
plastic bag this week!
Eco Club's Recycled
Greenhouse is Finished!
Everyone in school has been helping to collect plastic bottles for a
lone time - now we can finally see what Eco Club have been working
on...an amazing recycled greenhouse!

Year 4 Go Horse Riding
Last week 14 children in year 4 started horse riding lessons! They
were all a bit nervous at first but it didn’t take long for their
confidence to grow. They’ve spent the whole week looking forward to
their lesson this Friday.

Gateway Summer Party!
A BIG thank you to everyone involved it really was a
splendid afternoon. Plans are already being made for a
bigger and better event next year!
Visit to Tresham Day Centre
On
Monday, eight children from Year 4 went for a 'sing-a-long'
at the Tresham Day Centre on the Lisson Green Estate. The
day centre is a meeting point for older members of our local
community. They enjoyed singing songs such as 'You Are My
Sunshine' and 'My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean'!
Open Evenings
We will be holding our
usual end of year open evenings this week (beginning
July 5th). Year 6 will be next week when we have
all the SATs results.
If you have not yet arranged an appointment
please see one of your child's teachers before or after
school to book a time.
Reception and the Nursery have their
own booking systems and will see parents when they collect
their children.
Sports Day
This Thursday (8th July), weather permitting,
Year 1 & 2 are holding their sports day. The weather forecast
says it is going to be hot so I propose leaving for
Regent's Park at 9.30 a.m. and plan to return to school
after an early picnic lunch.
(PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATE FOR YEARS 1&2)
Y6 Visit to Kings College University
Year 6 recently visited Kings College University. The trip
was an opportunity for the children to experience and find
out more about further education. As part of the day, the
children made mortar boards and took part in a 'graduation'.
Westminster Gymnastics Competition
This week Gateway participated in the first
ever Westminster Gymnastics Competition. Despite only having
2 weeks to learn the challenging routines the Year 3 / 4
team won the entire competition. Additionally, Labib in 3
Scarlet won an individual medal for the best floor routine
and Mahim in 3 Cherry won a medal for the best vault. Well
done!
Gateway Cricket
On March 22nd 2010, the Gateway cricket team made their way
to the final of the London Schools Cricket Finals. In order
to get into the last match they had to win 4 games against
other London Borough finalists and yet still succeeded.
Finally, playing against a team from South London, they
sadly lost by just 10 runs. However they came back to school
very proud as no other Gateway team has made it as far in a
competition which over 360 schools enter.
