Inclusion

At Gateway we endeavour to support every child’s individual needs to enable them to achieve their full potential.

Special Educational Needs

We try to identify those children who may need additional help as early as we can. The school SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) leads regular reviews of all the children in our care. For those children identified as having special educational needs we have a comprehensive programme of support. Parents are involved at each stage of the process and are very important partners in this work.

From time to time support will involve outside agencies such as:

  • School Nurse
  • Speech therapist
  • Educational Psychologist
  • Behaviour Support Team

Gifted and Talented

As part of the special educational needs reviews we also try to identify those children who are either exceptionally gifted academically or talented in a particular area such as sport or music. We try to provide additional support and challenges for these children to extend their development. Again, parents are informed as part of the process.

EAL

The great majority of children at Gateway have English as an additional language. Consequently language development is central to all we do and an inherent part of our curriculum. All our teachers are used to develop fluency in English.

Resources to support this work, developed at the school, are widely used across the Authority
