Healthy Foods

The Food Groups

What do they look like? They include Why do we eat them?
Fruit and Vegetables

 

Fresh, frozen or canned vegetables, fresh, frozen or canned fruit, dried fruit, fruit juice, beans and pulses (e.g. peas, chick peas and lentils)

Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables helps to keep your body healthy and fight infections. You should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Proteins

 

Meat (e.g. lamb, beef, pork, bacon and sausages), poultry (e.g. chicken), offal (e.g. liver), fish, eggs, nuts, beans and pulses (e.g. peas, chickpeas and lentils)

These give the body protein, which helps the body to grow and repair itself. Have some of these foods every day.

Fats

 

Milk, cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais

 

They contain protein, minerals including calcium and lots of vitamins. They help keep your bones and teeth strong and healthy. Have some foods from this food group everyday.

Carbohydrates

 

All sorts of bread, chapatis, potatoes and sweet potatoes, breakfast cereals, pasta, rice and noodles.

Your body needs carbohydates (starchy foods) to give you energy.  You should eat lots of starchy foods every day.
