Geography

We believe our children should have the opportunity to learn about their own area, the wider world and the people who live in these places.

Infant classes focus on our immediate environment and start to make comparisons with the wider world. The children learn through involved topic work projects and activities vary between written and more fun based activities.

Junior classes study the weather, map work,  environmental changes, local area and comparisons with the wider world, some year groups are lucky enough to study a country where their learning becomes all encompassed in that country and culture.

History

Being a central London school we are lucky we have so much history on our door step. It is possible for us to take advantage of these primary resources by taking the children to some of the best museums in the world.

Infant classes are taught an awareness of the past, the children begin to make comparisons between past and present and are introduced to different types of historical sources, e.g.. artefacts, buildings, books, objects, pictures, people.

Junior classes are taught about ancient civilisations and the history of other parts of the world e.g. Ancient Greece and Egypt. We encourage the children to  develop a sense of chronology and learn about changes in everyday life over long periods of time, where topics lend we want the children to develop research, enquiry and communication skills.

History in Gateway Primary School

What is History?

History is learning about the past. This helps us to understand more about how things are in the present. What we learn can help us to make decisions about the future.

What do we learn about?

In the Infants we develop our skills and practice finding things out about:

·         toys in the past

·         homes in the past

·         famous people from the past

·         famous events that happened in the past.

In the Juniors we use all of our skills to find out more about:

·         The Ancient Egyptians

·         The Ancient Greeks

·         The Romans in Britain

·         The Vikings in Britain

·         The Tudors

·         World War 2

Things to do

Time lines A time line is like a number line with dates on it. It shows you what happened when in the past. It can be horizontal or vertical.

Draw a time line to show the events that have happened in your life so far. E.g.
