Communication, Language
and Literacy
The development and use of Communication and
Language is at the heart of young children's learning. Learning to
speak and listen emerges out of a secure base in the child's mother
tongue, as well as out of an understanding of non-verbal
communication, such as eye-contact, facial expression and body
language.
In the Nursery the activities children take
part in engage many of the senses, allowing the children to
experience first and then communicate verbally. Emergent writing and
pre-reading skills are also encouraged through a variety of
activities in the Nursery environment.
These activities are continued and extended
upon in the Reception classes, where the Jolly Phonics programme is
used to teach children the sounds that letters make. This knowledge
helps the children to develop their reading and writing skills.
