Design Around You
Everything that has not grown naturally has been
designed by someone! There are many different areas to look at:
|
Graphic Design
This is the design of
words and pictures, the logos of your favourite trainers, the
magazines you read, the plastic bags for your bread and butter -
even this website has been designed! |
 |
|
Furniture Design
Look around you, why are some
chairs hard and others soft? Why do cups have handles on them? The
features of the furniture around you have been chosen to suit
their purpose. Chairs are different depending on what you use them
for - it would be hard to write at a table in a low soft chair,
and who would want to watch TV on a school chair! Cups have
handles so you don't burn your hands with a hot drink. designers
have made these objects to fit their purpose - and they are always
being improved!
Can you think of any improvements
you would make?
|
 |
| Architecture
The design of houses, schools and
other buildings is a very complicated area of design. To become
an architect you need to be able to combine maths, science and
art - not to mention forward planning! Look at the buildings
around you, can you see any similarities and differences?
Different times in history often have different styles, can you
tell which buildings come from the same time? |
 |
| Toy Design
New toys are being invented all the
time, they need to be safe and fun! Sometimes that is a very
hard combination. There are lots of different things to be
considered when you are designing a toy:
How much will it cost?
Who is it for?
What will it do?
Have a think about a toy you
would like to play with, ask yourself the questions from the
'questions to ask' section, and then go ahead and design it!

|
Fashion Design
A popular area of design is that of fashion
and textile. This area looks at clothes for different purposes,
and patterns on materials. You can see new designs on the
television and in magazines of all sorts. What sort of things do
you need to think of when designing a new school uniform? Or a
swimming costume? Or a football strip?
|
 |
Have a go at our 'designerly' thinking in the 'questions to
ask' section, and try out being a designer. Invent something
new or simply improve on something that already exists. The
world is always changing, go on, be part of the change!
